Jasmine Gorean Book club meeting Topic: Gorean Foods 05/10/23

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): Greetings and welcome to Jasmines Gorean book club! This weeks topic we will be discussing what Gorean Foods are and how they are prepared.

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): Gorean foods and drinks is quite varied. Slave girls are trained to serve, prepare and cook a wide variety of foods and recipes. Even free women also learn how to prepare many recipes. Paga kajira must be familiar with many foods and beverages so that they can properly serve the patrons of the tavern. Some foods and beverages are very similar to Earth and others are uniquely Gorean. We shall explain a wide variety of foods and beverages on Gor. Not all of the food and beverages will be available everywhere on Gor. Some are regional items that would be very rare outside of their place of origin. Not every tavern will stock all of these products. Some items would be too expensive for an average paga tavern to keep on stock. Other items would be so rarely ordered, that a tavern would see little profit in stocking the item. For example, a paga tavern in Jasmine would see little need to stock fermented milk curds, a drink of the Wagon Peoples.

Lady Mae Leidolf El Congo (MaevaO Etchegaray): i just handed outthe recipe NC to everyone present grins feel free to share it.

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): "Thank you Lady Mae."

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): Popular Foods of Gor:
Bread & Grains:

Sa-Tarna: A grain, yellow in color. It is a staple of Gor. It is called Sa-Tarna, or Life-Daughter. It is also brewed into Paga. It is ground into flour to make baked goods.
Sa-Tarna Bread:

is made from in mills and traded all over Gor. It’s traditionally baked in round, flat loaves and cut into eight pieces: “‘Two of four,’ she said. That would be half a loaf. The bread would be in the form of wedges. Gorean bread is almost always baked in round, flat loaves. The average loaf is cut into either four or eight wedges.” Renegades of Gor

“There were great quantities of the yellow Sa-Tarna bread, in its rounded, six-part loaves.” Raiders of Gor

Black Bread: “Their food is that of a galley slave, peas, black bread and onions.” Hunters of Gor

Brown Sa-Tarna: in the Tahari, the Sa-Tarna has adapted to the heat and so is a brown color.

Some other grain items made in Gor are:Biscuits,Cereal,Crackers,Flour,Rolls,Sa-Tarna, BreadBlack, Unleavened Bread.

Neptune (NeptuneHunter Resident): mm interesting

Many types are considered to be a delicacy.SomeLady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): of these pools contain voracious eels, of various sorts, river eels, black eels, the spotted eel, and such, which are Gorean delicacies. (Magicians of Gor, page 428)

Parsit: Slender, striped flaky fish, of the type added to Bond-Maid gruel. This fish is delightful when roasted in a bag made of Rence paper, and topped within it with a dollop of Verr butter, some herbs from the gardens, and sliced red Tyros olives. It is a delicacy suited to even the tongue of a high-born Mistress.Like the bond-maids, she had been fed only on cold Sa-Tarna porridge and scraps of dried parsit fish. (Marauders of Gor,page 56)

Clams,Crabs,Marsh, SharkNorthern, Shark,Octopus,Oysters,Sea Sleen,Snails,Squid,Whale,White-Bellied Grunt.

Neptune (NeptuneHunter Resident): its good many have same name.

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): "Yes quite alot of foods on Gor do have the same name as on Earth."

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): This next food source is well consumed all over Gor. The Meats of Gor:
Bosk: A bovine creature, treated like cattle. There are fifteen varieties, but are thought of most often like oxen. Any cattle equivalent dish can be made from this. Can be served roasted and sliced, or as steaks. The milk of the bosk is very drinkable and can be used to make cheese and churned for butter.

"The bosk, without which the Wagon Peoples could not live, is an oxlike creature. It is a huge, shambling animal, with a thick, humped neck and long, shaggy hair. It has a wide head and tiny red eyes, a temper to match that of a sleen, and two long, wicked horns that reach out from its head and suddenly curve forward to terminate in fearful points. Some of these horns, on the larger animals, measured from tip to tip, exceed the length of two spears." — Nomads of Gor, pages 4-5.

Tabuk:a single-horned antelope or gazelle like creature, who’s dishes tend to be more along a venison variety. Steaks are often made from these.

Tarsk: This meat can be roasted, fried made into sausage. A salty pork like meat. Keep in mind the salt content with this dish, salt can be used to bring out the taste much like pork but too much can ruin it!

Verr:A goat-like animal. The meat can be eaten. It's milk can be used for drinking or the making of cheese and butter.

Kailiauk:a major source of food for the Red Savages. Almost every part of this animal is used for something.Pemmican: a soft cake, prepared in various ways. The most common is strips of kailiauk meat, dried and ground into a powder is mixed with crushed fruit, usually chokecherries. The whole, then, is mixed with, and fixed by, kailiauk fat, subsequently, usually, being divided into small, flattish, rounded cakes. Eaten or used like jerky, and can even be boiled later in water. It’s known as Wakapapi to the Red Savages.

Other Meats enjoyed on Gor:Brush, Urt,Mountain Deer,Tharlarion.

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): On Gor fowl is also raised some of the birds they eat are:
A Gant:a small, horned, web-footed aquatic fowl, broad-billed and broad-winged.” Raiders of Gor -Most prepare and serve this like duck.

Vulo: A small pidgeon-like bird. Can be cooked and eaten. The very small eggs are cooked for the breakfast meal by frying them in a large, flat pan. Takes several birds or many eggs to make a meal.

Tumits:A large flightless bird with a hooked beak hunted by the Wagon People with bolas.

A few other fowl mentioned are theCoast Gull,Qualae and Vosk Gull.

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): Now we will discuss the Vegetables available on Gor:

Katch: a foliated leaf vegetable. Many consider it a lot like lettuce or spinach.

Kes: the blue secondary roots of a Kes Shrub is used often used in sullage, a type of soup.

Rence Paste: when fried, makes a kind of cake often sprinkled with rence seeds.

Rence Pith: the pith of the rence plant is edible, a staple in the diet of the Rence growers in the Vosk delta. It’s eaten both raw and cooked.

Sul:We use suls as a main side dish due to the many various ways we can make this. Basically it is compared directly to a potato (which is also on Gor), and the many ways that those are prepared can be translated to Gorean dishes -a favorite being sliced and fried. It’s a starchy golden-brown ‘fruit’ of a golden-leaved Sul plant.

“The sul is a large, thick-skinned, yellow-fleshed, root vegetable. It is very common on this world. There are a thousand ways in which it is prepared. It is fed even to slaves. I had had some at the house; narrow,Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): cooked slices, smeared with butter, sprinkled with salt, fed to me by hand.” Dancer of Gor

Vangis: all we know about vangis is it comes in leafy bundles, so is often used in salads or as a presentation ingredient.

Corn: Presumably the same as corn on earth. Grown by the Sames in the Barrens. They grow produce for their masters, such as wagmeza and wagnu, maize, or corn, and such things as pumpkins and squash. (Savages of Gor, page 234)

TUR-PAH: An edible tree parasite with curly, red, ovate leaves; grows on the tur tree; a main ingredient in sullage.First she boiled and simmered a kettle of Sullage, a common Gorean soup consisting of three standard ingredients and, as it is said, whatever else may be found, saving only the rocks of the field. The principal ingredients of Sullage are the golden Sul, the starchy, golden-brown, vine-borne fruit of the golden-leaved Sul plant; the curled, red, ovate leaves of the Tur-pah, a tree parasite, cultivated in host orchids of Tur trees; and the salty, bluesecondary roots of the Kes Shrub, a small, deeply rooted plant which grows best in sandy soil. (Priest-Kings of Gor, page 45 Magicians of Gor pg 244)

Some other vegatables Found on Gor are:Bamboo Shoots,Beans,Cabbage,Carrots,Ground Pods,Kelp,Kort,Lotus Roots,Mushrooms,Olives,Onions,Parsley,Peas,Peppers,Potatoes,PumpkinRadishes,Rence Cake,Sip Root,Squash,Tubers,Turnips.

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): Fruit Larma: two kinds of varieties exist. There is the pit fruit, or applelike or hard larma which is firm single-seeded pit fruit with a single stone at the center. And then there is the juicy, segmented, or succulent larma that has a hard shell but is easily broken into to reveal a juicy and delicious fruit within. Often many think of this like an orange. Offering an unasked for succulent larma, or even a yellow peach, real or imagined, is a silent statement that the slave desires her owner.

Ram-berries:a small reddish fruit with numerous edible seeds.

Tospits:also two kinds, a rarer long-stemmed version which usually has an even number of seeds, and the normal version that usually has an odd number. The tuchuk take great delight in betting on the outcome of the number of seeds. Both are a bitter, fruit loaded with Vitamin C, sometimes called a seaman’s larma. They are most often used in seasoning cooking or served sliced with honey or syrups. Most think of this like a lemon.

Ta-Grapes: purple grapes about the size of a small plum -usually grown in Cos. Wine is also made from these.TA-GRAPES:Purple grapes grown on the terraces of Cos.The grapes were purple and, I suppose, Ta grapes from the lower vineyards of the terraced island of Cos some four hundred pasangs from Port Kar. (Priest Kings of Gor, page 45)

CHERRIES: Tyros cherries, Famous. With the tip of my tongue I touched her lips. Some slave cosmetics are flavored. “Does Master enjoy my taste?” she asked. “The lipstick is flavored,” I said. “I know,” she said. “It reminds me of the cherries of Tyros,” I said. “I do not know what the flavor is,” she said, “but it is lovely, is it not?” (Beasts of Gor, chapter 28)

Chokecherries:"In Kantasawi," he said, "the moon when the plums are red." This was the moon following the next moon, which is known variously as Takiyuhawi, the moon in which the tabuk rut, or Canpasapawi, the moon when the chokecherries are ripe. "Will this give you time to return to Kailia. (Savage of Gor, pg, 253)

kap (kaptarious Daikon) feels his stomach grumble at all the delicious sounding food.

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): Others foods enjoyed throughout Gor are: Sullage and Porridge

The Bond-Maid Gruel:often made and fed to slaves: “I, mixing the water with the precooked meal, formed a sort of cold porridge or gruel. I then, with my fingers, and putting the bowl even to my lips, fell eagerly upon that thick, bland, moist substance.” Kajira of GorSullage: A common soup made of suls, kes, and tur-pah as well as anything else that is handy at the time. First she boiled and simmered a kettle of Sullage, a common Gorean soup consisting of three standard ingredients and, as it is said, whatever else may be found, saving only the rocks of the field. The principal ingredients of Sullage are the golden Sul, the starchy, golden-brown, vine-borne fruit of the golden-leaved Sul plant; the curled, red, ovate leaves of the Tur-pa, a tree parasite, cultivated in host orchids of Tur trees; and the salty, blue secondary roots of the Kes Shrub, a small, deeply rooted plant which grows best in sandy soil.Priest-Kings of Gor, page 45.

Lady Mae Leidolf El Congo (MaevaO Etchegaray): too bad G & S sombra kitchen, does not have half as many choices as these.

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident):"Yes thats a shame Lady Mae but there are a very good variety of ingredients and options which is nice."

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): A wide variety of spices and Seasonings are used when preparing dishes:

Such as: Cinnamon Cloves Condiments Garlic Herbs Nutmeg Salt: Gorean salt is white, red, and yellow.Sesame Seeds  Sugar: there are four sugars mentioned, but ONLY white and yellow are mentioned by name.

Neptune (NeptuneHunter Resident): (these lists are handy)

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): "Will be interesting to see what you prepare Mae"

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): Goreans also love sweets and enjoy many of these tasty treats:
Taskas: These are not candies, incidentally, like sticks, as, for example, licorice or peppermint sticks, but soft, rounded, succulent candies, usually covered with a coating of syrup or fudge, rather in the nature of the caramel apple, but much smaller, and, like a caramel apple, mounted on sticks. The candy is prepared and then the stick, from the bottom, is thrust up, deeply, into it. It is then ready to be eaten. As the candy is held neatly in place there is very little mess in this arrangement. Similarly, as the candy is held in its fixed position, it may, in spite of its nature, be eaten, or bitten, or licked or sucked, as swiftly, or slowly, and as much at one’s leisure as one might please. These candies are usually sold at such places as parks, beaches, and promenades, at carnivals, expositions and fairs, and at various types of popular events, such as plays, song dramas, races, games, and kaissa matches. They are popular even with children. (Dancer of Gor)

CHOCOLATE: First cocoa beans probably came from Earth, Cosians obtain them in the tropics, rich and creamy. It was a small, hard candy. It was sweet. I closed my eyes. It was the first sweet I had had since I had been brought to Gor. In the plain diet of a slave girl, such things are very precious. Girls would fight and tear at one another for a chocolate. (Slave girl of Gor, page 216 Kajira of Gor pg 61)

FLAVORED ICES: Ices sold at various events, the actual flavors used are unmentioned.I heard a slave girl wheedling her master for a pastry. Free women, here and there, were delicately putting tidbits beneath their veils. Some even lifted their veils somewhat to drink of the flavored ices. (Assassins of Gor, page 141)

Other sweet items made and used are:Black Syrup Cake Candy Caramel Custard Fudge HoneyBread Honey Cakes Honey Sauce Honeyed Chestnuts Honeyed Pastries Honeyed Tur-Pah Licorice Mint Sticks Molasses Pastries Peppermint Sticks Pudding Sherbet Spiced Custard Tarts Turian Sugar Turian Syrup Chestnuts.

Lady Dara (AthenaYiYi Resident): Last but not least we have eggs and Dairy products:

Vulo Eggs: we get our eggs mostly from vulo. Any egg dish can be made with these, but they are smaller than chicken eggs so increase the number!Gant Eggs: Layed by a gant that looks like a Duck from Earth.

Milk: The bosk and verr will be our main sources of milk. The Tuchuk like a drink made of fermented milk curds. Milk can also come from a kaiila, the one in the Tahari gives a salty reddish milk.

Other dairy products used are:

Cheeses, creams, butters, etc come from milk.

Bosk Milk, Powdered Kaiila Milk Verr Milk ButterBosk Cheese Creams Creamed Sauce Verr Cheese.

Most people Dont want to wait for a long paragragph of food prep

Lady Mae Leidolf El Congo (MaevaO Etchegaray): Cookbooks and cookbook huds are available at Main G&S sim, the latest Hud 1.26 i checked yesterday and it is still the most recent hud out.
